Yaverland · Isle of Wight
Sandy shores, spectacular sea views and a little Isle of Wight history
A beautiful corner of the Island for beach days, coastal walks, dog-friendly adventures and fascinating discoveries.
Imagine long walks along golden sands, the fresh sea breeze, spectacular coastal views and the freedom to explore with your four-legged friend by your side. Welcome to Yaverland, one of the Isle of Wight's special seaside locations.
Situated on the Island's eastern coast, just beyond Sandown, Yaverland combines the charm of a traditional coastal area with a wonderfully open feel. Whether you're planning a family break, an adventure-filled escape or a peaceful getaway with your dog, it's a lovely place to slow down, breathe in the sea air and make lasting holiday memories.
Yaverland Beach is a real highlight, with a long stretch of sand that expands dramatically at low tide. There's room for beach games, sandcastle building, seaside strolls and finding your own spot to sit back and enjoy the sound of the waves.
The dramatic cliffs around Culver Down create a distinctive backdrop, with contrasting sandstone and white chalk, blue sea and golden sand. Check tide times before visiting: at high tide the available beach can be much narrower.
Yaverland is a great place to explore with your dog, with coastal paths and open countryside nearby. Beach access for dogs is subject to local restrictions: use the designated dog-friendly section and check the latest Isle of Wight Council guidance(opens in a new tab) before travelling, especially during the summer season. Please keep dogs under control, clean up after them and follow local signs.
One of Yaverland's defining features is the striking chalk headland of Culver Cliff and the open downland above it. Walk up onto Culver Down for far-reaching views across Sandown Bay, towards Shanklin and the southern coastline, or north towards Bembridge and the Solent.
The open landscape is ideal for coastal walks, photography, picnics and wildlife watching. Paths can be steep or uneven in places, so choose a route that suits your group and take care near cliff edges.

History & heritage
Yaverland is more than a beautiful beach. Its story includes a medieval village and church, a historic manor house, Victorian coastal defences and the Island's extraordinary geological past.
Yaverland Battery was built between 1861 and 1864 as part of a network of coastal defences intended to protect Sandown Bay from a potential landing. The site was remodelled around the turn of the twentieth century, used for coastal artillery testing in the 1930s, and returned to a defensive role during the Second World War. In 1943, two six-inch guns were reinstalled and manned by the Home Guard. The battery was decommissioned in 1956.
Its surviving remains are a protected Scheduled Monument and are not open for public visits — please enjoy the history from public paths only.
St John the Baptist Church has Norman origins, and Yaverland Manor is a Grade I listed historic house reconstructed around 1620. The nearby fossil-bearing coastline is part of the Isle of Wight's internationally known dinosaur heritage. Fossil hunting should be done responsibly, with attention to tides, cliff-fall warnings and local guidance.
